At CareProvide Canada, we’re privileged to work alongside caregivers whose compassion and dedication truly transform lives. We’re honored to spotlight Lila, a caregiver who brings not just skill but heart to every moment she spends with her clients.
What made you become a caregiver, and how has it changed your view of caring for others?
“I became a caregiver because of personal experience with family members who needed extra support as they aged or dealt with illness. Initially, it was a response to their need, but over time, I learned how deep the emotional and physical toll can be. It’s taught me that caregiving isn’t just about doing tasks—it’s about compassion, patience, and building trust. I’ve come to see caregiving as an essential, often unseen, service to our communities.”
Can you share a powerful moment from your caregiving experience?
“One moment that stands out was when I was caring for someone in the final stages of illness. We hadn’t spoken much in the last few days, but one afternoon, they opened their eyes, looked at me, and simply said, “Thank you for being here.” It was such a small gesture, but it was incredibly powerful because it showed how much my presence had meant, even when they could no longer express it in more obvious ways.”
What are the biggest challenges caregivers face, and how can we support them better?
“One of the biggest challenges is the emotional and physical exhaustion that comes with being constantly ‘on’. Caregivers often put their own needs aside, which can lead to burnout. We need to offer more support in terms of respite care, mental health resources, and better financial compensation, as caregiving can sometimes feel isolating. Offering these types of support can help caregivers stay healthy and provide better care for others.”
How can we make people more aware of the crucial role caregivers play in society?
“One way is by highlighting caregiving stories in the media and in conversations that are often overlooked, whether it’s through documentaries, articles, or social media campaigns. Education and advocacy on the importance of caregiving can help people understand the sacrifices caregivers make and the invaluable role they play in our communities.”
What improvements would you like to see in caregiving in the future?
“I would love to see more emphasis on training and support systems for caregivers. There should be more accessible resources that provide not only practical caregiving knowledge but emotional support as well. Additionally, improving the work-life balance for caregivers through more flexible job options or paid family leave would go a long way in ensuring that caregiving can be a sustainable and supported.”
