Great caregivers don’t just provide support; they bring comfort, kindness, and a genuine sense of care to those who need it most. This month, we are proud to highlight Ekwutosi, a caregiver whose passion for helping others has made a lasting impact on her clients and our team.
What made you become a caregiver, and how has it changed your view of caring for others?
I became a caregiver mainly because of my passion for helping others. I have always had this in me, I genuinely care about people and sometimes even feel their pain. Helping those in need brings me so much joy and fulfillment, especially individuals who are helpless or unable to care for themselves due to health challenges or aging.
Can you share a powerful moment from your caregiving experience?
One powerful moment from my caregiving experience was when I had to care for a client who was in severe pain due to a past accident. I had been looking after her for a while, but one day, while helping her shower, she kept groaning and letting out sharp cries whenever she tried to move her back. It was heartbreaking to witness. I made sure not to show my emotional anguish, but I immediately reported it to my supervisor. A few days later, she felt much better after her child took her to see a doctor.
What are the biggest challenges caregivers face, and how can we support them better?
One challenge caregivers face is the language barrier. Some clients prefer caregivers who speak their native language, but finding caregivers fluent in those languages can be difficult, as not everyone in those language groups is in the caregiving profession. More caregivers may need to learn additional languages.
Caregivers also face significant health risks due to the physical and emotional demands of their role. It’s essential for them to prioritize self-care by maintaining their physical and mental well-being through regular exercise, proper nutrition, adequate rest, and routine medical check-ups.
How can we make people more aware of the crucial role caregivers play in society?
Communities can raise awareness about the challenges caregivers face by encouraging open conversations. This helps reduce stigma and feelings of isolation. Additionally, the government can recognize caregivers as a vital part of the healthcare system by implementing policies that provide financial and emotional support.
What improvements would you like to see in caregiving in the future?
I would love to see more people become caregivers, as the demand continues to grow rapidly. I also hope for higher pay, better compensation, and more recognition for caregivers through awards, bonuses, and other incentives.
