At CareProvide Canada, we’re proud to honor the hardworking caregivers who bring compassion and dedication to their roles every day. This month, we shine the spotlight on Myrine, whose inspiring journey into caregiving reminds us why this work matters so much.
What made you become a caregiver, and how has it changed your view of caring for others?
I became a caregiver after seeing a close family member struggle with an illness. I realized how important it is to be there for someone when they’re vulnerable. It has completely changed how I see caring for others. I now understand the emotional and physical toll it takes, but also how rewarding it is. It’s not just about helping with tasks but being emotionally present and offering companionship.
Can you share a powerful moment from your caregiving experience?
One of the most emotional moments for me was when the person I care for, who had suffered a stroke, was finally able to feed themselves again after months of therapy. It was such a simple, yet profound moment. Watching them regain that small but significant piece of independence felt like a huge achievement. It reminded me that progress isn’t always about the big milestones, it’s about the little moments that help restore their dignity and confidence.
What are the biggest challenges caregivers face, and how can we support them better?
One of the biggest challenges is the constant physical and emotional strain. Caregivers often put their own needs last, which can lead to burnout. More support is needed in the form of respite care, mental health resources, and financial assistance. Additionally, we need better training and access to information to navigate complex medical and emotional needs.
How can we make people more aware of the crucial role caregivers play in society?
One of the most effective ways is through storytelling sharing personal experiences of caregivers so others can understand the depth of their work. We need to create more platforms where caregivers can speak about their needs and challenges. Media campaigns and educational programs could help to highlight their importance, not just in terms of the work they do, but the emotional and mental effort involved.
What improvements would you like to see in caregiving in the future?
I would love to see more professional recognition for caregivers, especially in terms of pay and benefits. Caregiving often feels like a full-time job but isn’t compensated as one. In the future, I hope there’s more funding for training, more affordable respite care options, and greater awareness that caregiving can be a long-term, demanding role that deserves both financial and emotional support.
