This month, we’re putting the spotlight on Roanne, one of our incredible care providers who brings not just skill but an immense amount of heart to everything she does. Her story is one of compassion, dedication, and the deep belief that caregiving is more than a job, it’s a calling. Here’s a glimpse into what inspires her, the challenges she faces, and the lessons she’s learned along the way.
What made you become a care provider, and how has it changed your view of caring for others?
I became a care provider because I’ve always had a deep desire to help people. There’s something incredibly meaningful about being there for someone during their most vulnerable moments. Over time, this role has completely reshaped how I see caring for others. It’s not just about physical assistance, it’s about dignity, respect, and making people feel valued. I’ve learned that small acts of kindness, patience, and genuine connection can make all the difference in someone’s life.
Can you share a powerful moment from your caregiving experience?
One moment that really stayed with me was when I was caring for a client with Parkinson’s disease. He was an incredibly proud and independent person, but as his condition progressed, simple tasks became frustrating for him. One day, he was struggling to button his shirt, and I could see the frustration in his eyes. Instead of stepping in right away, I sat beside him and encouraged him to take his time. I reminded him that it was okay to ask for help, but I also let him try on his own. When he finally got the button through, he looked at me with such a mix of relief and pride. It was a small victory, but it meant everything to him. That moment taught me that caregiving isn’t just about doing things for someone, it’s about empowering them to hold on to their independence for as long as possible.
What are the biggest challenges care providers face, and how can we support them better?
One of the biggest challenges is emotional exhaustion. Caregiving is rewarding, but it can also be physically and mentally draining. Many caregivers work long hours with little recognition, and the emotional toll of seeing people struggle can be heavy. We can support caregivers better by providing more resources, fair wages, mental health support, and simply acknowledging the importance of the work we do. A little appreciation goes a long way.
How can we make people more aware of the crucial role care providers play in society?
I think it starts with storytelling, sharing real experiences of caregivers and the people they help. Many people don’t fully understand what caregiving involves until they or a loved one need care. Raising awareness through social media, community events, and even workplace discussions can help people see just how essential this role is. It’s not just a job; it’s a lifeline for so many.
What improvements would you like to see in caregiving in the future?
I’d love to see more support systems in place for caregivers, including better training, access to counselling, and higher wages. Technology could also play a bigger role in easing workloads, things like digital records and AI-assisted care could help reduce burnout. But most of all, I hope for a cultural shift where caregiving is truly valued, not just as a profession but as an essential part of a compassionate society.
