CareProvider Spotlight: August 2026

For Funmi, caregiving started long before she became a caregiver.

Growing up, she watched her mother care for the people around her with patience, kindness, and genuine concern. That experience stayed with her and eventually shaped the kind of caregiver she wanted to become.

Today, Funmi carries those same lessons into her work. She believes that caring for someone is not just about helping with what needs to be done. It is about taking the time to listen, respecting who they are, and making sure they feel valued.

In this month’s CareProvide Spotlight, Funmi shares the experience that first inspired her, what has kept caregiving meaningful for her, and why the small moments of connection can sometimes mean the most.

CareProvider Spotlight

1. What made you become a caregiver and how has it changed your view of caring for others?

“My interest in caregiving began from a very young age, inspired by my mother and the way she cared for and nurtured the people around her, especially our immediate family. Watching her show compassion, kindness, patience, and genuine concern for others had a strong influence on me and shaped the way I understand caring for people.

As I grew older, I realized that caregiving is much more than helping someone with their daily needs. It is about treating people with dignity, respecting their individuality, listening to them, and making them feel valued and supported. My experience has taught me that even the smallest acts of kindness can make a meaningful difference in someone’s life.”

2. Can you share a powerful moment from your caregiving experience?

“One of the most powerful experiences for me has been seeing how much a client can benefit from genuine companionship, patience, and encouragement. There have been moments when a client has smiled, thanked me, or expressed how much they appreciated my presence and support.

Those moments remind me that caregiving is not simply about completing assigned tasks. It is about building trust, providing comfort, preserving dignity, and helping someone feel seen, valued, and cared for. Knowing that my presence can make someone’s day a little easier is one of the most rewarding parts of what I do.”

3. What are the biggest challenges caregivers face, and how can we support them better?

“Caregiving can be both physically and emotionally demanding. Caregivers may face long hours, challenging situations, emotional stress, and the responsibility of meeting the unique needs of each client.

Caregivers can be supported through adequate training, open communication, fair working conditions, opportunities for professional development, and recognition of the important work they do. It is also important for caregivers to have access to guidance and support when they encounter difficult situations.”

4. How can we make people more aware of the crucial role caregivers play in society?

“We can increase awareness by sharing real stories and experiences that demonstrate the impact caregivers have on individuals, families, and communities. Social media, community events, public education, and recognition programs can also help people better understand the value of caregiving.

Caregivers often work quietly behind the scenes, but their contribution is essential. They help promote dignity, independence, safety, comfort, and quality of life for the people they serve.”

5. What improvements would you like to see in caregiving in the future?

“I would love to see greater recognition and appreciation for caregivers, more opportunities for career growth, continuous education and training, improved communication between caregivers and management, and stronger support for caregivers’ overall well-being.

I also hope that technology and innovative approaches will continue to improve the safety and quality of care while ensuring that compassion and human connection remain at the heart of caregiving.”

Thank you, Funmi

What stands out in Funmi’s story is how closely her approach to caregiving connects to where it all began – with watching her mother care for others.

The lessons she learned at home continue to influence how she supports her clients today: with patience, understanding, and a genuine concern for their well-being. For Funmi, a simple smile, a thank-you, or knowing that she made someone’s day a little easier can be just as meaningful as the care itself.

Her perspective also reminds us that caregivers need care and support too. Training, communication, recognition, and opportunities to grow all play an important part in helping caregivers continue doing their best work.

Thank you, Funmi, for sharing your story and giving us a glimpse into what caregiving means to you. We appreciate the heart you bring to your work and the difference you make, one person at a time.
